Prije II. svj. rata poha\u0111ao je IV. gimnaziju u Zagrebu, gdje mu se ime gre\u0161kom nalazi na spomen plo\u010di \u017ertvama II. svj. rata. Po uspostavi NDH s majkom je prebjegao u Italiju, a 1941\u201343. njegov je otac kao jug. oficir bio u njema\u010dkom zarobljeni\u0161tvu u Osnabr\u00fccku, odakle je bio pu\u0161ten na intervenciju tal. Crvenoga kri\u017ea. Na tal. granici bio je skinut s vlaka i poslan u tal. logor za ratne zarobljenike. Pu\u0161ten je nakon kapitulacije Italije u rujnu 1943. te se pridru\u017eio obitelji, koja je bila u tal. izbjegli\u0161tvu. God. 1948. diplomirao je na liceju \u00bbChateaubriand\u00ab u Rimu. Obitelj se 1950. iselila u SAD, gdje je studirao na Massachussets Institute of Technology i Tulane University u New Orleansu, 1958. doktorirao je biokemiju. Djelovao je kao sveu\u010dili\u0161ni profesor i znanstveni istra\u017eiva\u010d. U braku s Myriam ro\u0111.
